Fitness Facility Flooring Solutions › Materials, Application, and Installation Tips

Fitness facility flooring solutions can be found (in some form) in DIY, hardware style big box stores, online mega flooring supply stores, and high-end commercial specialty and technical flooring manufacturing and distribution companies. It is advisable that you consider the full service and value proposition offered by a supplier. It is a good idea to consider the source of exercise products and flooring solutions before committing to a purchase. While a CrossFit™ box operator might throw down horse stall mats to cover the facility floor, it isn’t a viable solution for larger, high volume, health clubs like Equinox®, Lifetime Fitness®, 24 Hour Fitness®, Town Sports International®, or gyms like Gold’s Gym® David Barton Gym®, Crunch Fitness®, Anytime Fitness®, or other fitness facilities including YMCA®, and JCC’s.

Not all health club flooring or fitness facility flooring is equal. Materials used to manufacture various types of fitness, sports and recreation flooring (including their adhesives) range from urethane, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rubber, recycled scrap rubber, polymers, vinyl, and plastics. Fitness facility flooring covers a large selection of applications ranging from large sections of rolled rubber, interlocking floor tiles, specialty, and technical LED and sensor-enabled flooring tiles, interlocking PVC and blended plastic tiles, and an assortment of glued-down segments of flooring. It is important to understand the fabrication process a manufacturer uses to develop these types of specialty flooring – using inadequate flooring materials in conjunction with activities not suited for specific fitness facility flooring or applications can be a very costly mistake.

Fitness Flooring Systems › Rolled Rubber › Interlocking Floor Tiles

Commercial vinyl and rolled rubber flooring for certain areas of your health club or fitness facility may make sense, specifically in large open areas that do not require significant protection from abrasion, such as you might find in a cardio area. Specialized formulations of rubber, plastics, and polymers are used to develop several interlocking flooring systems for aerobics rooms, free weight, and group fitness areas, as well as specialty areas of a health club like martial arts, yoga and ground exercise rooms. Unlike the above mentioned rolled rubber and interlocking tiles for workout areas, wet areas require special materials and special application to secure a nonslip, safe, floor covering for health club members who are likely walking on wet surfaces found in the shower and locker rooms, swimming and spa areas. Dense, non-slip, PVC interlocking tiles and related materials are best for this application. Make sure you contact us for specific material data related to fitness facility flooring manufacturing materials, thickness, net dimensions, weight, density, hardness, shock absorption, and environmental ratings. We can provide complete data on all aspects of technical information, common uses, materials, available colors, and the installation process of any fitness facility flooring system.

Note the image below of the man performing functional training exercises using resistance straps, floor anchoring, and our proprietary high-density rubber fitness flooring with water-jet cut inlaid markings. Does your fitness area look like this? Imagine how many people could be using this area at one time. Group training is a large part of successful exercise programming in both nonprofit and profitable fitness facilities, gyms and health clubs.

The second image below illustrates a woman using our vertical fitness solution. This image demonstrates the exercise in a modified fashion. Modified exercise form is used for common exercise modalities, for example, as the modified wall press demonstrated in the image – to continue exercise during injury recovery. This application is perfect for people training for sports conditioning or utilizing reactive timed exercises. Participants use a variety of exercise accessories including med balls, and weighted balls to practice throwing and bounding exercises completed in all three planes of anatomical motion. These types of exercises challenge career athletes, student-athletes, kids and young people, and mature people or seniors equally. Given the limitless nature of exercise prescription – it is clear that all populations can benefit from functional training, dynamic bounding, and throwing exercises. Do you have a sports-specific training program in your facility? Do you include exercise programming for people of all ages?

Flooring Solutions › Aerobics, Free Weight, and High Traffic Areas

To get a better idea of what type of flooring you should use to meet the needs of your health club traffic, frequency of use, and specific activities or purpose— you might ask yourself a few questions about the type of fitness programming and physical activity each of your health club areas host. For example, in high traffic areas, such as hallways, offices, and conference rooms, rubber or less dense polymer flooring may not be your best option. Hard flooring or more dense flooring solutions, like heterogeneous PVC, will provide protection from long-term wear, abrasion, and prevent premature replacement. Along these lines but slightly different would be flooring for free-weight rooms. Free weight room flooring must be thick, dense, and provide a significant level of noise and vibration absorption — and be hard enough to withstand direct and repeated dropping of weights, scuffs, and protection from high volume abuse. This is a perfect example of how it might prove a costly mistake to use rolled rubber flooring in a free weight room because rolled rubber flooring tends to shrink excessively, gouge easily, and will wear prematurely. In direct contrast, an interlocking group fitness flooring system would require the installation of a flexible polymer or rubber-based flooring that would provide a high level of shock absorption, antibacterial properties, water protection, and thermal insulation.
